University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Business Campus
With Article 50 now triggered, the Brexit process gets underway in earnest. Our speaker will be David Hughes, Head of the Office of the European Commission in Wales, which acts as the conduit between different Welsh interest groups and the various EU institutions. With his extensive knowledge and contacts on both sides of the English Channel, David will discuss implications and challenges in the months ahead.
David became Head of the Office of the European Commission in Wales in June 2012. In this role, he represents the European Commission in Wales and is its spokesperson. The Office does not, however, manage EU funding. Originally from North Wales, David has spent 22 years in the European Commission, 18 of them in Brussels. He has worked in a range of policy areas, from agriculture to the environment, but with his main focus in the field of education and culture. He has worked in the Cabinets (Private Offices) of various EU Commissioners and as Head of Unit in the field of education.
Before joining the European Commission, David worked as a UK civil servant in the European Fast Stream, as a Further Education Lecturer (History and Politics) in London and as an English teacher in Germany. A history graduate, David also holds Master degrees in EU law and European Languages and Literature.
Cost: Free for members, £10 for non-members (light buffet and refreshments included)
